Reviewing William Shakespeare:
Macbeth

William Shakespeare has been known for many famous plays.
Some of them are for the cause of comic wit, clever comedy, like his early play Taming of the Shrew, as well as Twelfth Night.
Then we have the tragic plays like Hamlet, the play of all plays, where we see a confused Hamlet saying his famous speech:
“To be, or not to be: that is the question:
Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune,
Or to take arms against a sea of troubles,
And by opposing end them?...”
Shakespeare also wrote one of the darkest plays in the history of literature, Macbeth: King of Scotland.
Macbeth was written by Shakespeare in between 1603 and 1607, but the common date is 1606.
I will discuss the play in three sections:
1- Plot summary and elements in the Plot.
2- themes that are discussed in the play.
3- Key characters.

1.A- Plot summary:
Macbeth tells the story of a general in the army of king Duncan, ruler of Scotland, and a Thane of Glamis.
In the play Macbeth meets three witches, who give him predictions about his and his friend Banquo’s future.
The witches predict that Macbeth will be Thane of Cawdor, and then become king of Scotland, and tell Banquo that there will be royalty in his family, but he will not be king.
On his way back to Scotland, Macbeth receives the title Thane of Cawdor.
After their return, lady Macbeth, Macbeth’s wife, hears about the witches and their predictions and tells Macbeth to kill Duncan to become king.
That night, Macbeth kills Duncan and becomes king of Scotland.
Macbeth then invites Banquo and Fleance, Banquo’s son, to a royal banquet, where Banquo tells Macbeth that he and his son will leave.
Macbeth then send the assassins to kill Banquo and his son. The assassins succeed in killing Banquo, but fail to kill his son.
Macbeth then returns to the three witches and asked them about their predictions, in which the witches respond with three more predictions.
The first is a armed head, which informs him that he must beware of Macduf, the second is bloody child, which informs him that no one born of a women shall harm him, and the third is a crowned child with a tree, which informs him that he will be safe until Great Birnam Wood comes to Dunsinane Hill.
Macbeth then asks if any of Banquo’s sons will reign in Scotland, in which the witches respond by telling him of an eight crowned kings procession, who are all similar to Banquo, with the last one with a mirrior that reflect more kings.
Macbeth realizes that those are Banquo’s descendants who have acquired numerous countries.
Macbeth then knows that Macduff has left for England, Macbeth then sends murders to kill Macduff’s wife and child.
Lady Macbeth starts felling guilty about the crimes she asked her husband to commit and starts sleepwalking.
Macduff learns about his families death and vows revenge.
Prince Malcolm assembles an army to challenge Macbeth, and Macduff decides to join the army.
The army makes its way to Scotland, and when they reached the Birnam Wood, they cuts down a carry tree and carry in order to disguise the army.
As the army attacks, Macbeth learns that his wife has committed suicide, and in a moment of despair Macbeth says his famous line:
“ To-morrow, and to-morrow, and to-morrow,
Creeps in this petty pace from day to day,
To the last syllable of recorded time;
And all our yesterdays have lighted fools
The way to dusty death. Out, out, brief candle!
Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player,
That struts and frets his hour upon the stage,
And then is heard no more. It is a tale
Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury,
Signifying nothing.”
Macduff then faces Macbeth and Macbeth informs him that no one from a woman can hurt him, in which Macduff responds that he was “from his mother's womb” and not of woman born, in which he was born by Caesarean section.
Macduff then kills Macbeth and cuts his head. And prince Malcolm was declared the new king of Scotland.

Even though the witches said that Banquo’s decedents will become kings, Malcolm was crowned the king, but to Shakespeare’s audience this was indeed true, as James VI of Scotland became James I of England, and he was a descendant of Banquo.

1.B- Element in the plot:
In this section I will discuss the elements that made Macbeth the darkest of Shakespeare’s plays.
I will focus on two elements, settings and scenes, as well as psychology.
A- settings and scenes :
In the history of drama, Aristotle said that there are three unities that a play must have:
- Unity of time: that play must finish in one time period.
- Unity of place: that a play must happen in one place.
- Unity of manner: that the events of a play must be either private or public.
However, Shakespeare, has defied these unities in all of his plays, including Macbeth.
Macbeth’s setting gives us a dark picture of the world that is in, the setting of the play express the nature of the events, as Shakespeare chose the right settings for the right scenes.
An example for that is the first scene where Macbeth meets the witches, we have a storm that fits the scene perfectly.
The storm makes the viewers, or the readers, pay attention to the event that are happing, as the storm provides the start of Macbeth’s confrontation with the witches.
The settings also play a role in the private scenes, as we see in the scene where Lady Macbeth convinces Macbeth to kill Duncan as well as the scene where lady Macbeth tells him that water will wash the blood, the setting provides a dark and quiet atmosphere that drives us to think about what is happing on the stage, and wonder about lady Macbeth said to him after he killed Duncan.
And let’s not forget the scene where Macbeth says his famous speech, the settings and the speech made the perfect scene in the play, where Macbeth’s country is under attack and his wife has just committed suicide, the scene shows as a desperate Macbeth as he says his speech.

B- Psychology:
Shakespeare has shown that he can temper with the human mind, and this is proven in a number of his plays, like King Lear and Othello.
The element of psychology is seen in two characters, Macbeth and lady Macbeth.
For lady Macbeth, psychology plays a minor role, as lady Macbeth is seen sleep walking, because of her sense of guilt.
But psychology plays its biggest roles in the mind of the main character, Macbeth.
In the scene where lady Macbeth convinces Macbeth to kill Duncan, we see Macbeth confused psychologically, he wonders if what he is about to do is right or wrong, and after he kills the king, we see a more confused Macbeth for the same reason, and wondering whether water will indeed wash the blood away.
At the final scene before his farewells speech, we see Macbeth’s psyche reaches his limits where gathers all of his rage and frustration and says his farewell, realizing that everything that happened was a result of greed.

2- Themes
Macbeth, like most of historic tragedies, talk about three things
A- The fall of the king:
This theme is discussed in most of Shakespeare’s tragic plays.
Macbeth kills the Duncan so that he becomes the new king of Scotland, but Macbeth is faced with the problems that comes allowing with power.
Suspicion, guilt, and responsibility were the price that Macbeth had to pay for his new title as king.
B- Ambition and greed:
These themes appear in Macbeth when he first meets the witches.
When the witches tell Macbeth that he will become king, he becomes ambitious and wants to know the meaning of the witch’s predictions, but that ambition becomes greed as soon as he becomes the king.
3- Key characters:
Every character in Macbeth play a role in the play, but there are three characters who play an important role:
-Macbeth:
Macbeth plays the most important role in the play, as he is the one who does everything that makes the play dark and gloomy.
Macbeth’s role relays on his mentality, as we see him moving from ambition to greed and then to guilt.
The play is gloomy because of Macbeth’s mentality, and how it changes from one form to another.
- Lady Macbeth:
Lady Macbeth is the key to Macbeth’s mind, as she knows how to make him do what she wants.
In the scene where she tells Macbeth to kill Duncan, she tricks Macbeth by using his manhood as a way to make him kill Duncan and become the new king, and when he does she uses soft words to convince him that he did the right thing.
- The three witches:
The three witches are the Characters that makes the play unique.
Shakespeare used characters in Macbeth that he does not usually use, to be specific, he uses the three witches to make the play unique and make it more darker.
By using witchcraft and predictions, Shakespeare makes the three witches the starting point to Macbeth’s ambition.

Conclusion:
Macbeth may not have the full elements of a play, like Hamlet.
However, it has its own elements that makes it unique in its own way.
The three witches, lady Macbeth, Macbeth himself and his mentality, ambition, and greed, as well as his farewell make
Macbeth, the play, one of the darkest plays in literature history.
