to you, which books do you think deserve to be read

You are doing a great job by such books you read
To me I think Religious and historical books are to be a must read specially these days

f you started reading a book.. hmm and you stopped at something crucial relating to religion..
would you continue reading that book or not

What do you mean by crucial ? things related to others' beliefs or an attempt to criticize ours ?e
It depends on how crucial it is , and I think most of the time I would ignore it if the book I got is really worth reading

Do you think a book can be the ONLY friend of you ?

Your book is your best guide that you shouldn't let go of
you see in most advanced nations books are glorified the most , so yeah it has to be your best friend most of the times

thnx Azuma san

sorry for ambiguity, i was out of place "it's a book by Edward Said" :P
what i mean, there are such books for Muslims mm who adopt Western beliefs
Salman Rushdie's Satanic Verses for example..

what i want to ask here, do you close your mind when an author deals with the Holy things like mocking Islamic faiths
:D
or you accept the book and try to keep these stuff out of your mind.

another question :D
what do you think of the books talking about Orientalism ? shouldn't we "educated ppl" read more in the field of politics to know where Muslims stand and where we should stand ?

this is for today :P

.I believe we ,as Muslims , should be open minded to understand the world around us
If books like Salman rushde's were meant essentially for mocking Muhammad then what good or relief will it bring me ? let alone wasting my money and supporting him. We can be opened to things that will do us good and if it was of a high literary value , then I think literature will lose its value when based on mocking others' creeds
I can't judge but people like him might use something like this as an excuse to win fame or whatever purpose he sought, d
yet this very writer might have another marvelous book that It will be a waste if I didn't read it so no harm in reading him somethin new !g

what do you think of the books talking about Orientalism ? shouldn't we "educated ppl" read more in the field of politics to know where Muslims stand and where we should stand ?

.I was going to add politics when you asked me subjects that are worth reading but I forgot

Well , orientalism has always carried a negative implication though books like Sigrid Hunke
can guarantee pleasing your eyes . I never read a book by an orientalist except Sigrid 's
شمس العرب تسطع على الغرب
what else do you recommend ?I hate to be gullible after all
Sure we must go deep into politics to learn and avoid alot specially when all nations have already won their bite from our flesh
! and if there is so much to learn in such books well why not quenching our thirst

Nice questions little book worm
: ) I'm not by the way but trying to be

, i understand your point of view about Rushdie's books
i wanted to know if other ppl think as you or those ppl who say why not reading about anything.. but religion aside :P
(those are my teachers :||||||)

about orientalism, i don't know alot>> expect Edward Said, you should try his books.. not because he is a Palestinian professor worked in
American universities.. but because he gives an accurate image of what happens in colonialism, post-colonialism, imperialism and so on

this speech reminds me of an article, an amazing one !!! Sartre's Preface to Frantz Fanon's Wretched of the Earth

Sigrid Hunke

i remember her name when we talked about Sartre and Fanon :D verrrrry interesting !!

After reading such stuff dealing with politics, my mind becomes more and more open :D

bookworm

looool XD
ok.. i might be lolz thanks to SOMEone <3

Religious books are important you know I'm currently reading
تفسير إبن كثير
and I knew many things I thought I got them right concerning the Quranic verses
I think with every verse I become a new Muslim , it's something beyond imagination , yet If you come to see my book case most of the books are literary and academic
So we must be cultivated not close minded and vary in what we readIcon-yes0

I will study your Palestinian writer and learn more about the colonialism , I will give history and politics alot insha'alla , you see I have the Arabian encyclopedia where I can find something about colonialism , have you got other reference !??
:( It's true that the oreintalism had made the way easy to the colonialism and some say it was the ultimate aim of some orientalists

!May be we Arabs must become ourselves orientalists and be more interested in ourselves and identity

I don't mind
I wanna know more about some good books like yours

`Big Brother is Watching You`
`peace is war, war is peace`
lolz ... memories !!!
George Orwell is the author of 1984 ( one of the best novels ever, Do you know that Code Geass is a parody of it ?) .. most of his novels are political ones
..
i've read 1984 and Animal farm... both are sarcastic, criticizing the world, Europe. WW, WWII

his language is very very very simple and catchy !!!

Twilight !
In fact I WAS not convinced with all Bella's fabricated drama that I couldn't stand

Umm as for the language ,I wouldn't say it's easy , there are far more vocabulary in English than I had just expected while reading the novel ! indeed the plot isn't successful at all but there is a very indescribable deal of description Stephenie includes which what I admire the most in her book

But I couldn't see the cause of all the fuss that is made out of her books ! She's been really over rated ! may be coz the majority are teens and that will increase her thumps up
When I discussed this with my teacher she had some expressions that I had never seen on her face when talking about Bella , hah she's irritated by the author choice of heroine ! g

and I agree with my teacher , how can't I :P

yes very excited to reading Tess as soon as possible
I don't have time either but I try to make use of the little I have

Good luck with a new reading list mate

You kinda remind me of my sister's obsession with a novel full of puzzles and digging for some sort of treasure
the novel's heros are : a jewish , a christian and a muslim
and the puzzle is related to sayings from all these three religious books, altogether they break the code
اللوح الأزرق
The novel seems very magnificent , the writer is with vast knowledge about Quranic and Hadith sayings

speaking of books , yesterday I finished a book titled as a visit at the prophet's house

Peace and mercy and blessings be upon him
..
Also I'm currently reading a new series of dear dumb diary that is even more dumb
this kinda books got to help us know more about the slang
..

My Tess project was canceled though I'm soo stunned at it but the language is sooo difficult for a poor learner like me
got to wait a little more till it becomes easy or almost so -_-
..
.Shakespeare , yup though I hate him but sometimes he can get u funny interesting stuff

Nino chan
28-11-2012, 09:39 PM
I DO hate Shakespeare too

but there's a play entitled "The Tempest" i wish i can read soon
because it was intertextualized by Eliot in his The Waste Land
and also in
"لا تصالح" لـ أمل دنقل
i believe they both use Shakespeare's idea of pearls
(the issue of eyes )

i've finished "Zainab" lol.. and currently reading
زيتون الشوارع لـ إبراهيم نصرالله

hey asmaa
..
how're you ?
..

i can't taste sth when i don't fully understand the content
i hate when it comes to look up the meaning of words
..

so that i always asks about the language even the text is very long..

look up words in dic is a big prob i face
I hate it but I have to make myself know the meaning
but this is quite a progress , I might face only one new word within a whole page
so we must thank not bully ourselves for that, mustn't we ?!:)b

I finishe reading
"Al chemsit"
It's very very good , I think that will be very intersing If I read connected and not intermittent
its language is an intermediate.
the summery of the story
"An Andalusian shepherd boy named Santiago. He was dreaming a lot about treasure. then , he decided to travel find it. he meets a gypsy and tells him that there is a treasure in the Pyramids in Egypt . Early into his jounry, he meets an old knig who tells him that you should sell his sheep to travel to Egypt and introduces the idea of a Personal Legend, so the old king says "Your Personal Legend "is what you have always wanted to accomplish. Everyone, when they are young, knows what their Personal Legend is". (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Alchemist_%28novel%29#cite_note-3) He adds that "when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it .
Along the way,he encounters love, danger, opportunity, disaster and learns a lot about himself and the ways of the world. During his travels, he meets a beautiful Arabian woman named Fatima and meets an achimest who teaches also about personal lenged"
