i dont have the same idiom but i have a similar one in my dic, it could help u
but with replacing the word (earth) with (moon)
i think the meaning wont change, i am not sure of this ^^
so it becomes : "howling at the moon"
if u say that someone is howling at the moon, you mean he is wasting his time and energy trying to do something which is impossible .
that is what i have ,,,,
